No Mention of 'Walk Hard'?
by jasamcarl
While it isn't as subtle as Airplaine (ha!), I thought this was actually a decent parody of the musical biopic, and really, it could almost work as a satire of the underlying appeal of the 'musical legend' type generally. Of course, for whatever reason, it didn't do particularly well at the box office. Perhaps the genre it was riffing wasn't quite as stupid as the dregs that 'Meet the Spartens' and its predecessors are pretending to make fun of but are really just mindlessly referencing for their audience.

I somewhat liked The New Guy...

Walk Hard wasn't spoofing a genre, it was essentially spoofing just two films. Plus it looked terrible, despite John C. Reilly's performance.

That's not true. It also spoofed a number of made for t.v. bio pics, especially with its decade by decade parodies. Did you actually see it?

And it was as good as American spoofs get at this point, though not up to Hot Fuzz and Shawn levels (can't believe I forgot those).

I think the "Walk Hard" creators noted that they'd looked at all the recent musical biopics ("Ray," "Walk the Line") and old ones ("Buddy Holly," "Elvis," "Coal Miner's Daughter")....and they were "all the same movie."

Funny thing: to me, the joke of that is how often the Oscar Academy has slavishly doled out nominations and awards to actors for "the same movie."
