emergency movie review !!!!!
by baltimore aureole

we went to see "meet the spartans" on saturday.

save your money. even at only 70 minutes, its way too long.

the original "300" movie provides enough material for only about 15 minutes of parody.

this might be the worst movie i've seen over the past 12 months.

Thank you for the public service. My hubby was thinking it might be a funny movie, thank God we didn't go. I'll tell him to wait for the video - probably won't be too long - lol!

It opened at #1. More of these type films on the way. How did we get from Airplane! & Spaceballs to this?
no country for old men....
by intersurfa
...has about 15 minutes worth of plot in it, and no message what so ever, but was easily the most entertaining movie i have seen in a long time. it was chuckfull of art, humor of various kinds, anthropology (Americana has a particular fascination for me).
yeah, rambo was #2
by baltimore aureole

rambo was the most advertised film, but worst reviewed (1 star), and was a close second to "spartans"

spartans was not released early to reviewers, which is generally a warning sign in its own right.

i do enjoy movie parodies - scary movie 3 (a parody of "signs", "8 mile", "the ring" and others) i found funny.

spartans tries to parody only 1 film - 300. not enough material. and they didn't do well with what they had. the "name" actors are carmen electra and kevin sorbo.

i can only agree - i saw it and enjoyed it.

"old men" is based on legitimate literature, and beyond being an action film, its also a "character" film (tommy lee jones and josh brolin). character development is what redeems action films from mediocrity.

"a history of violence" was similarly constructed, and similarly received by the film critics and public.

I heard a commercial for it on the radio, and thought it might be worth a watch. And considering that it is #1, why not? But thanks for the heads up. I will use my money to go see Rambo instead...lol!
think I remember a critic saying

January is a death sentence for movie releases. Only the worst come out then.

Some friends were telling how good Cloverfield is. I don't know. A monster versus a bunch of New York hipsters. I'm rooting for the monster a little bit LOL
cloverfield is famous because

the handheld camera (unstabilized) has induced nausea in some audience members

several critics have made the same observation as you - there is no apparent reason to root for the humans in this monster flick

I hate the recent "waggly" camera development. I get motion sick fairly easy, so I try to avoid those sorts whenever possible.

But I also dislike it because it's simply slopy filmography! The film isn't any more exciting because the camera is bounced around! It's like they want to make up for crappy special effects, or poor choreography by jiggling the camera. It especially irritates me when I know that the people doing the fight scenes can do them well. In my opinion, this is what killed the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

This is one reason why I didn't like the Bourne movies. They had so much potential, and then they wrecked it with the stupid camera bouncing around.

ever hear of "Blair Witch Project"?

even before that I videotapped my sister's eigth-grade play, and it was shaky and very first-person in the moment. What I'm trying to say is I invented this entire style of filmmaking.

Comedies are thin on the ground, that's the truth. I'm not sure, but i think the last decent comedy i saw was "Meet the Parents" and that was years ago. Or "As Good as it Gets" if that counts as a comedy.

The Scary Movie franchise is just appalling - tell your boyfriend you should be spanked for that one.

BWP was marketed at sundance as a "real home movie" (which it wasnt)

that's why the formula failed for BWP2 - the sequel

cloverfield had the same basic idea, but wasn't marketed as authentic - more as scripted reality monster movie.

by the way, shaky cameras weren't invented with these movies. i'm not sure where they were invented, but cinema verite has been a component of "day for night", "NYPD blue", "cops" (which is more scripted than they let on), and many other shows and movies

ok, fine, I didn't invent it

I was a sixth grader on too much sugar. I was just trying to impress you.

I didn't even know there was a Blair Witch sequel. I liked that movie. I saw it as a big "eff you" to the establishment. Plus, the pathway out to my back alley where I used to have to take my garbage wound through a grove of old trees and it was haunted! Or at least pretty scary!
Thanks

I never go to theaters. I always do Movies On Demand through my cable company. It takes a while for the current releases to get there, but I enjoy watching at home more than in a theater.
