Rebates: One Dumb Idea that won't work
by jpmarat

The idea that giving each American $3-600 to "stimulate the economy" makes extra nonsence when you consider that the average family is several thousand dollars in debt and has monthly bills to pay. Which is where that money will go.

How about creating jobs and some regulation so banks aren't allowed to make sucker loans to suckers.

Seems llike whenever banks play fast and loose with other people's money, the world economy explodes.

Not that their CEO's care at all. They get fired and walk away with a $40,000,000 severance package. Only in America, do we reward incompetence and failure.

I agree with just about your entire thought, except, instead of creating MORE regulation, simply make the consequences for irresponsible business practices so severe that banks and lenders wouldn't dare screw things up.

Regulations, like laws, only work when you have people who would be willing to follow them in the first place. To many businesses, regulations are more an obsticle to circumvent.

This is a brilliant idea to stimulate the neoconomy.

Pelosi is sucking Bush's weiner over it.

You would think that we would have learned our lesson after the Reagan financed Savings & Loans failures of the late 80's.The one that saw Neil Bush make off with millions while the S&L he ran went belly up and his daddy covered up for him.

Curious. You need to explain one thing

"simply make the consequences for irresponsible business practices so severe that banks and lenders wouldn't dare screw things up."

How would this be accomplished without creating more regulations that carry the force of law?

Re: Curious. You need to explain one thing

We start by getting them to follow the regulations that they are already under.

Kind of like guns, you can and have created laws on top of laws to keep people from using guns improperly, but the funny thing about criminals is that laws mean nothing to them. So all you are doing is regulating people who don't need regulation.

What you need to do is make the punishment for use of a gun against another person so severe that even people who no problem killing another would think twice before doing it.

I advocate the same for banks and lendors. They know what lending practices are good and which arent.

Dumbya Bush tried this stupidity with rebates before, and it failed miserably.

As far as deregulation goes.....

Well, if Ronnie Alzheimer Reagan and every republican since hadn't taken away the regulation of the banking industry this sub-prime scam never would have happened.

It's the same crap that has happened every time these republican clowns de-regulate an industry. The crooks take over and the rest of us get screwed.
