Recycle sewage waste...
by dorian_slate
...as bottled water. Legislation should be passed requiring that all bottled water sold in the US contain at least 75% recycled sewage. That should reduce the plastic bottle load in the landfills.

Bottled water. Now there is an incredibly wasteful and stupid practice.

The US enjoys the safest municipal drinking water in the world. Period. Its one of the few areas where we still excel.

And yet people constantly buy bottled water because it is ‘safer’. What a joke. Hell the vast majority of bottled water sold (especially those from Coke and Pepsi bottlers like Aquifina) comes from ‘municipal sources’ meaning its same tap water you’re already drinking. Maybe run through one of two extra filtering stages, but it’s the SAME WATER.

Actually some studies suggest the extra filtering is removing things like fluoride that leads to additional tooth decay in children.

Not to mention all the bottles taking up space in landfills and driving more plastic production, the fossil fuels burned distributing the water sometimes hundreds or thousands of miles from the bottling plant and the fact that consumers are stupid enough to pay $2-5 dollars a gallon or more for what they get out of their sink for pennies.

If you’re that concerned about the quality of the water from your tap (and you really shouldn’t be) then there are a number of relatively inexpensive and effective filtering systems you can buy for home for a fraction of the cost of buying water from the store.
