the holly and the ivy
by Racje
I went out and gathered a bunch of ivy, a few holly branches, and some wind-blown pine tufts, juniper and rosemary. I wrapped them around my windows. I hung heirloom ornaments and paper cranes. They look great.

If I wanted something more tree-like, I would wrap them around a tent-pole armature. If I lived where ivy turns brown in the winter, I'd stick to evergreens. Or maybe I'd try crochet.

No need to transport anything from anywhere, and no need for PVC.

Very poetic and gentle image that I can appreciate. While I like the imagery I can't see that I could do without transporting, like paper, yarn and items for minimalist existence, even when I cultivate my own foodstuff. I could do without PVC in these circumstances, of course. Where is this lovely location that you depict?

Sorry I missed your comment, cliffrose, but if you're still checking this thread, I'm in northern California, in the urban Bay Area. Our Christmas trees are shipped in from forests far away, but there's lots of greenery flourishing all over.

I agree that it isn't possible to do without any transport at all. But perhaps in every location there's a way to make a beautiful and joyful display without so much destruction?
