Don't follow the money...
by gobot90

My guess is that for Rowling this is less about financial gain and more about her need to control the discourse regarding this vast world she has created.

(And I promise that will be the last time I use the word "discourse" as it relates to Harry Potter.)

If Rowling were on a control jag, she would have long ago shut down all the Harry Potter fan sites that are out there, not allowed any of the scores of other Harry Potter books that exist to be published, and would have sued the popular "wizard rock" bands. But she hasn't.

This case is about copyright and trademark law, contrary to Wu's article. If only there *were* discussion and criticism in the Lexicon book, it would be published. However, RDR the publisher has explicitly stated that the critical essays from the Lexicon website will not be in the book. Hence, the book is not a work of scholarly criticism as RDR and others would have folks believe.
