Send nuclear waste to the moon
by blueskies

on some sort of magnetic slingshot, the other toxic trash dump into the sun.

The first hurdle for that would be to make sure you had a foolproof launch system. One mishap sending radioactive and/or toxic material crashing back down on the Earth would be a disaster.

If we could do that, though, there's no need to put radioactive waste on the moon, though. We might want to mine there someday. If we can get it to escape velocity, the waste would spiral into the sun. The radioactivity isn't a problem. The sun is a immense and would swallow a thousands of tons of waste with no visible effect. And it already puts out so much radiation that even high level waste would be negligible.

I agree with you on deciding not to send nuclear waste to the moon. Not only may we want to mine there, it may be our only suitable option for maintaining human life once the Earth becomes unsustainable for living.

I'm uncertain about the sun. I agree that the waste would be enveloped without any noticeable difference whatsoever, but it still makes me nervous. Of course nothing would happen, and even if something did, the sun is so far away that we would never experience a reaction if one did occur.

Jeez, I don't know why whenever this comes up, people always suggest sending stuff into the sun or other objects. Just toss it in any random direction to drift eternally in interstellar space.

Of course, the danger at launch and incredibly high cost makes this whole idea a non-starter. But if you did do it, it doesn't matter where in space you launched it.

Well yes, it doesn't matter where in space you send it, but unless you want to invest the energy needed to get the vehicle up to solar escape velocity, anything you launch into space is just going to fall into the sun eventually.

Just launching it in the general direction of the sun would be the cheapest energy investment, but as I said, the first hurdle is making sure you have a foolproof launch system.

That first hurdle is a tough one. I was thinking of linear accellerators, but they eat a lot of power and self destruct too much in operation. Much work to be done to make it practical.
