Worse than child labor
by Phocas
When a developing country has its exploitative child labor practices exposed, we howl in outrage. How dare they turn a kid into an economic source, damaging its health! Yet apparently there's no problem with a competition encouraging exploitation of a child and its mother at an extremely vulnerable moment (aka childbirth) in a developed country. The families sending their 8-year olds into the factories and fields don't have a choice - the child must help out or the family will starve. We do. This practice is beyond shameful.
