To Hell with the roses, bring on the cabbage

Movies lie by creating false ideals of perfection! Imagine that! That never happens!

Could any concern be less trivial than a fleeting glance of roses amid the daffodils?

Actually, that's a weird form of gluttony, like demanding the toast be just so, neither too dark nor too light, and that the jam be placed on a certain part of the table.

But more importantly, even if the beauty of the scene is off, there hangs the question of what form the gardens of tomorrow might take. Is there a disordered Pride and Prejudice garden in our future?

Might we better be served learning how to grow cabbages rather than worry about the impossible flower arrangements of the movies?

Here in northern California we have daffodils and roses blooming together in the garden right now. The daffodils will keep blooming until hot weather arrives in April or May; the roses will fade a bit in January, but will be back in full glory by April. So, yes, in a Mediterranean climate like Italy and California you get daffodils and roses at the same time, in April.

And I'm harvesting collards and kale. Pretty close to cabbage.

My garden, like most gardens of people with other main occupations, does get intermittent neglect. I'd love to reveal myself through my garden as a person who takes bounteous care of everyone, but I am revealed as someone with bigger plans than ability to follow the plan.

Disordered? Anarchic? Wildly profuse? some of each.

Yes, me too (in Los Angeles). The roses I inherited from the previous owner this past June are still blooming like crazy. It's quite a scene... and the neighbors say it is pretty-much year round.
