Nah, that's mostly a hollywood-ism.

Early christians were more likely to be hung, crucified, beaten, beheaded, boiled, sewn in animal skins and thrown to dogs, cloated in wax and used as torches to llluminate a garden, racked, scourged, poisoned, even starved to death. They weren't any more likely to be thrown to the lions than anyone else who ended up imprisoned under Rome.

"Thrown to the lions" however, seem to have made good 'entertainment' in 200 AD and in 1950's and on - cinema.
