Compulsive Listening
by dnroberts
Thank you for introducing me to Amelia; it is wonderful and addictive. I have listened compulsively to Helpless by Neil Young, The Band, and JM singing beautifully on background from the concert film The Last Waltz. I agree that the best compulsive songs are filled with ambiguity.

I loved that mini essay on Amellia and compulsive listening. As an Australian, Amelia Earhardt lacks the resonance I imagine she has in the USA, but the song! How it echoed in my mind as I read.

I love the idea that Bob Dylan wrote "Tangled up in Blue" because of that album - more depth to both pieces of work for me.

As for Court and Spark - some very good moments and a breakthrough in style, but in the end, an album of transition following the emotional mastery of Blue. The albums that follow C&S are quantum leaps ahead musically and emotionally, as Joni mastered the musical genre.

Finally, some music I have compulsively listened to and will publicly admit I have - for what would be the point of all this wihtout some of that? :)

Joe Jackson's "Is She Really Going Out With Him?" - acappella version from his live set. (I've lived that particular angst.)

"One" by U2 - because it is also angst-ridden and clearly I have a hook in me for that ...

There's a Dylan harmonica solo in a concert he did in Tampa that I am lucky enough to have a copy of and I have been known to play that ten times in a row. Of course, the solo appears on "It Ain't Me Babe" and I had best get away from this conversation before a trend becomes evident and I mention Elton John's "Your Song". Oh dear! :)
