Movie? Materialistic? Horrors!
by SpaceCadet
The only surprise in this article is that Disney did NOT manage to get Amy Adam's lifetime image so it can brand the h-e-double hockey stick out of it.

How can anyone go to a "blockbuster" style movie and not just feel awash in the materialism, whether it's the blatant "buy the toy" of a Disney, Transformer, Spiderman, Pixer variety or the lifestyle porn that celebrates West Elm, Pottery Barn, Bed Bath and Be still my heart in the adult stuff? Look at the sets in adult dramas. Everyone in America, even in places that are specifically keyed to seem working or middle class, has a big place to live and some sort of chocolate and blue room with a perfect balance of stuff. There are no barren rooms and no clutter. How does that happen? Even in Clint Eastwood movies!

Even when the message isn't as obvious about materialism as Disney's movies (or TV shows. Watch a couple of episodes of Disney TV shows to learn just how elaborate the consumer lives of their young protagonists are) and especially the tie-in deals they have, the images are overwhelming.

If Slate is shocked by a non-ironical manicure, perhaps Dana should remember in Legally Blonde that although the pinkness was presented as ironic, ultimately it was all justified as part of Elle Woods' defense strategy and given its own hagiography — by the smart guy who got engaged to her, and her ex, who dumped her for a purported woman of substance, was a total loser. Not that I didn't thoroughly enjoy the movie, it's just that it could be read so many ways.

And that's the trouble with some of these materialistic movies. They make their own justifications through irony. Well, at least Disney was honest enough not to bother!!
