Potassium Salt
by amykate
My younger brother got a little worried after my Dad developed some heart problems. We did a little research and switched to potassium-based salt (instead of sodium). It sounds goofy, but it's actually a little saltier than regular salt, so you use less "salt" and you get more potassium in your diet. This is a good alternative if you are worried about your sodium content. You can buy it at any grocery store and replace the stuff in your salt shaker with it. It doesn't work well with some meds/health conditions though.

Potassium can be incredibly toxic, too. That's why they use it to execute people - it stops their hearts.

It tastes like nasty chemicals, too.

I bought some of that once. That stuff is nasty. It's like replacing sugar with saccharine; it's just not the same.

I haven’t tried potassium chloride as a salt substitute so I can't say weather it tastes nasty or not but it isn’t particularly toxic. It works for lethal injection because if you inject KCl intravenously you radically increase your blood potassium concentration; this stops the heart as stated above. This isn't an issue if you eat it (as opposed to injecting it), yes your blood potassium will still rise but it will do so at a slow rate and your body will have the opportunity to excrete the excess before it become a problem. Still, moderation in all things, if you eat about 1 1/4 teaspoon a day of KCl you will have gotten your entire recommended daily allowance of potassium.
