What is the thanks for the apology about?
by janeslogin
On RSS there was a lot of discussion about an apology but I was unable to trace the "Thanks for the apology" back to the apology.

Saletan published a 4th entry in "created equal" stating that he was sorry for using sources that weren't credible, admitting he was not expert on genetics and IQ, and that there were holes in his argument. I'm not gonna go further than that, the last time I did it spun off into the same debate haha

He didn't say "I'm sorry" until it was pointed out he hadn't and later added it (to the best of my recollection).

I'm going to have to start snap shotting Slate.

And note the apology was for lack of editorial process and not for the lack of editorial process for every work cited just one (while posters by their accounts have discredited even more). Nor did he apologize for the fact that the science is pure unadulterated crap.

He apologized for not knowing Rushton, one of his sources, was funded by a racist organization, the Pioneer fund. He did not, and did not admit to, using sources that weren't credible.

im pretty sure the whole point of bringing up rushton was to say that he wasn't a credible source, or else why bring it up

The Pioneer Fundies en toto...
by JahSun

Actually the overwhelming majority of hyperlinked texts in Saletan's articles go to studies funded by the Pioneer Fund. Jensen, Lynn, Gottfredson, Murray, Hernstein... and so on.

Saletan chose to focus on Rushton because Rushton is already fairly well considered a kook by the science community. (see his penis length & ejaculation distance studies on race as correlated to IQ)

Another reason he might not have wanted to talk about professor Richard Lynn is that there is now a preponderance of evidence that this man has completely fudged statistics and improperly handled data... data which his other Pioneer Fundies use in their studies incestuously. [a peer review in Nature of his 2002 piece of pseudo-scientific drivel]

Please read this before responding...

oh come on JahSun, the porn industry needs to know which race can ejaculate the furthest! This is imperative science. Perhaps we could genetically engineer the less powerful races to achieve greater distance
Three eighty eight

On response is specifically requested. If the request is respected I'll remove this in a week or two.

This "three eighty eight" reply was posted as a response to a nine month old post because that post wasn't very interesting to start with. The number of views of the old post and the response go up two or three a day even though it has been around for going on a year now.

I'm guessing that crawls and spiders and bots that are being registered as views. No one would go back there daily to view the silly thing would they?

...see what happens

Smart rulers (and usurpers) know the power of fear and use it during times of economic crisis to great effect:

Step 1, find a good victim.
Step 2, whip the masses into a lather in order to divert them from asking too many difficult questions about the current rulers, or to make the current rulers look feckless.
Step 3, let the blood wash away our sins.

This is one of the divide and conquer tactics that has been time tested. The Nazis had their Jews, the Aztecs (and Romans) sacrificed humans to appease the gods (and deflect criticism of their own poor economic management). If our current economic crisis doesn't abate soon, look to our glorious rulers to follow suit.

Re: OT: Slate needs a "sandbox"

Here in the compositon box this looks just like a copy/paste of the original. What does it look like after posting?

1 / 28 000 = 3.57142857 × 10-5

Interesting, after post, the copy/paste retains the bold of the original but not the point size and the tags associated with '-5' do not carry over.
