Stop stop stop, Mormonism is a cult, look up the definition. All religions are cults, they just loose the moniker once they are widely accepted. Personally I know very little about the beliefs of Mormons, and would like to keep it that way. The idea that a supposedly intelligent and rationale person would hit their knees, talk to themselves and then wait on the voice in their head to tell them what to do scares the hell out of me.

I personally believe that is how we ended up with dancing with the stars:). Oh, and for the rest of you that want to argue I pasted the definition to save you the time.

Irrelevent. I judge a religion on whether it promotes of inspires men/women to good things. I see mormons as good people and citizens.

"By their fruits ye shall know them." The "fruits" of the Mormons seem to be of service, love, and compassion. Did you include synonymous words for cult as well? Do any of the words I just mentioned find their way on that list? Probably not...

how can you judge this religion when you yourself just admitted you know nothing about it. It is amazing to me that people out there have such hate for a christian religion!! Learn more about what you are criticizing, then you are entitled to an opinion.

And you certainly aren't capable of understanding the point of one. I merely pointed out that the multitude of posts claiming that the Church of Latter Day Saints was not a cult were wrong. By definition they are exactly that. I did not attempt to analyze the entirety of the religion, and as far as that goes made no mention of the works, teachings, people or establishment. I am an atheist and believe all religion to be the result of flawed reasoning, but that was not part of the original post. I know that that indoctrinated mind won't let you contemplate anything that might be detrimental to the fragile little world you have been taught, but at least read what I said first.

I also was ex-communicated in 1988 after serving a mission in Spain. I was re-baptized in 1993 by Ron Schlerf in Spokane Washington.

Since I have a history of challenging the church on issues like blacks (not allowed priesthood until 1978)...and also the stand(against) homosexuals...I feel well qualified to say that Mormons are normal...non-cult....CHRISTIAN­S ! (-:

I am entitled to an opinion whenever I damn well please. I am not singling out mormonism. I could really care less which religion he proposes to follow. It is the mention in other posts of his faith and being devout that bother me. Religion can accomplish some wonderful goals, and nothing is better at motivating people than an eternity in hell, but I would just as soon believe that the tooth fairy really left those quarters under my pillow all those years ago.

the point was not that Mormons were any more or less Christian. Quite the opposite. Although when the point of your arguement is we are just as good as other Christians you might want to rethink the track your on. People, Christians in particular, have demonized cults through the years. Everyone thinks of them as a sect of devil worshippers or vodoo temples or whatever the hell else, when a cult is only a group of people gathered together to perform religous rites. I thought that pretty much summed up any religion.

I have met one mormon in my life and never knew he was a Mormon until years later. Not a big deal, I could really care less. I do feel that any aspect of Mitt Romneys life should be open for review. Anything that will have a bearing on his decision making while in office and spending my tax dollars entitles me to an opinion not only on his record, but on him. This includes his religion. Hitchens may have an axe to grind, he certainly slings mud against the religion, which he does against all religions, but it doesn't make the point of his arguement any less true.

Romney very well could be the president of the United States in about 14 months. So as long as he stands for election to that office it is his duty to inform me about his religion. I don't need to go ask another Mormon, I don't need to vist the LDS web site. I need the man that wants my vote to stand in front of a camera and explain to me how his belief system effects his decisions on a daily basis. If no one other than Hitchens has the nerve to stand up and demand accountability, then at least we have one sane mind in the group.

Mitt Romney can worship whatever whenever he pleases or not at all, it makes no difference to me. But if he is going to be president, then he damn well better be ready to explain whatever those beliefs are. If he happens to believe something that is not common to every member of society he absolutely will have more explaining to do, but again the people deserve to hear every minute of that explaination.

I think if you looked hard enough you could find the information about Mitt Romney's realtionship with his religion. I heard him speaking to Sean Hannity about it and Mr. Hannity recommended that Mitt give a JFK speech. In response, Mitt said I don't know if I feel any differently than JFK did. I thought that JFK set the mold and if my belief system were any different than I think I would say something.

In my opinion the speech is coming. Mitt is too smart to give it now though. I think you are intelligent to learn as much about Mitt, or any other cannidate as possible. I mean come on this is the American President we are talkin about here.

Good to read your entire opinion. Mitt is fascinating. I wish he would have the guts to really take on the issue. I think he will...or...he will be forced to respond...eventually
