Rational Racism
by mcdonald

Perhaps Saletan is here founding a new movement (at least a new movement to give an old movement a respectable public face): Rational Racism.

I suspect that what resonates as most existentially aggravating about thinking such as Saletan displays here, to those of us it rubs wrong, lies below the threshold of any reified logic: we intuit a fluidity of existence that category sharpeners like Saletan seek to frustrate.

But to give a more scientifically respectable answer, I'd refer anyone to the problem of inconspicuous multiplicities in correlation making.

Reductionist certainties seem constantly seductive to post-religious thinking.

Yet, there are indeed ways of showing attempts to reify particular empirical correlations to be yet further spurious jumps to metaphysical certainty. Even if one is supposing 'only' the certainty of one present instance. Search for the critiques of the Cartesian mentalism which centers Western science.

Saletan might also be a person of low IQ who is being led around by the nose. If I remember right he went to the American Enterprise Institute (just down the hall) for a lecture on what braniacs the Jews are. Subsequently, he quotes research that comes from a person associated with the AEI about how dumb blacks are. I wonder if he met that man just down the hall?

Not a conspiracy, but certainly a convegence of forces.

Note how Rushton in his bio talks about being raised in part in SOUTH Africa, curiouser, and curiouser....

Matt Yglesias at the Atlantic:

"Indeed, he concedes that there's evidence of a trend toward a narrowing of the black-white IQ gap that may in the future close the gap to zero, he just offers the opinion -- speaking as a non-technician whose decided to enter a debate he regards as highly technical -- that it probably won't. So he's not entirely sure he's right that blacks are genetically inferior, and he doesn't think this fact has any clear implications for public policy or how we should interact with individuals we encounter in our daily lives, but he just thinks it's really important to go on record with the view that blacks are inferior. Why?"
