"Best" pot ad? Really?
by physicsJen

I find it ironic that the only way I could actually enjoy watching this anti-smoking ad were if I were completely high. Even then, I bet the irritating music would still make me want to throw something at my television screen. I'm 24, so I'm guessing I'm at least near the age range of the target audience. That means they definitely should have upgraded to an artist with skills above that of a preschooler who happens to be color blind. While I'm more of a channel flipper than someone who'll sit through a bunch of lame commercials, there are still few commercials that I can't stand to see more than once, and these are definitely up there.

Plus, I like that in the latest research, done by David Nutt from Bristol University and incorporating actual (though truthfully not very extensive) data from experts in determing the harmfulness of substances, puts weed at the eleventh most harmful drug while alcohol is fifth and tobacco ninth.

I disagree, I think the ads are beautifully done, I just think the message is flawed. I'm 17 -- so it seems right in their target for these ads -- I don't smoke marijuana but a lot of my friends do. I think for PSAs like this to be effective, two things need to happen. One, it can't be from the Office of National Drug Control Policy (and no, "Above the Influence" from the Office of National Drug Control Policy isn't any better). Teens do not trust the government on this issue: they've spewed too many lies in the past (think D.A.R.E.). The second thing that needs to change is that the ads need to have something new to say. This campaign -- and the other one Seth Stevenson reviewed -- starts to scratch at that. The makers of these ads have realized that the health risks of marijuana are not that significant and that it's more effective to campaign on how it affects your personality. But somehow I don't think your girlfriend leaving you for an alien is going to significantly sway your risk/reward scale.

I agree with physicsjen, the commecails dont want to make me stop smoking. I'm 15 and im a stoner, so im assuming that this is supossed to get me to stop smoking green. But seeing stuff like this on T.V. makes me want to smoke. Being honest i dont see what the big dear is with pot being illegal. Ive never known someone who killed, been killed, or was influenced to rob a liquor stor because they were hig. The govenment is wasting tax dollars on trying to catch stoners when the truth is there not hurting anyone. The govenment should be trying to cant meth dealers, crackheads and anyone else who will literally kill for a fix.

I like smoking pot, it makes stuff fun and dosent hurt anyone. My freinds who dont smoke think the commercials are dumb also.

those anti pot ads are stuipid, and i will tell you why now.

1. the alein and the girl; first off any stoner i know wouldnt date a girl who didnt want him smoking pot and then smoke it in front of her, he would just save himself the trouble and find a nice girl who smokes pot and get along with her. Secondly this girl is a moronand a slut,(sorry for the language, i dont know another word to use) She will run off with an alein and board his ship( like getting into a car with a stranger) not knowing if hes going to kill and study her, and also run off with anything who dosent smoke grass. thats why i dont like that ad. and its stuipidly drawn.

2. the guy with the joint and the sober dog. i dont like this one becausehe was doing the polite thing and offering to share. the dog didnt want it but never in my life have i met a stoner who would beg a dog to smoke with him, its a message there trying to send by saying stoners are losers without freinds. thats a stario type that isnt true, in fact most stoners have lots of freinds in my veiw because most others are preachey and never shut up about how bad pot is. and thats why i dont like that ad any.

3. this ones my faverite. the girl and the dog. A girl has kottenmouth and is trying to quench her horrible thirst with some sort of a drink. now me and most freinds(sober and stoner freinds) have agreed in saying that if i just smoked a bowl and my dog started talking to me, i would take off upstairs and finish off the rest of my stash. But the main reason that i dont like this commercial is that the dog is being selfish in trying to change someone who is happy with who they are. I''m sure that if i could talk to my dog i wouldnt tell him to stop pooping in the yard, or to stop using his tounge as toilet paper and then like the couch. because its our faults that make us who we are today.

the truth is nobodys perfect, but i dont put ads on the tube to tell people why i dont like them and what to do, i accept them for who they are or just ignore and not hang out with them anymore. so until they anti pot people can get over them selves im going to keep toking until i cant feel my legs and just dont care.( Ill keep doing that when they get over them selves, ill just do it in public too ,bye)
