terrible analysis

so basically what this guy is saying boils down to: every team should just throw to the randy moss of their team and if hes not open throw to the wes welker. those two are arguably the NLF's best deep threat and slot receiver respectively. What does a team like the falcons do?

wait theres more. Brady throwing deep into double coverage to Moss should not and will not keep working, the first time he tried it against the colts it resulted in a pick. If a team without a very legitimate deep threat tries this against a team with a ball-hawk safety disaster will strike more often than not. Max protecting with "one or two tight ends" means that if youre sending three receivers out then you have no one in the back field. This means no threat of the run and defenses can drop back. If you dont max protect then you need a great line and a lot of teams dont have this either.

on the other side of the ball defensive stunts and zone-blitzes exist to neutralize the slot receiver when the deep threat isnt there. stunts and zone blitzes arent exactly rocket science for defenders to perform but they will confuse mediocre QBs.

The "simple" gameplan the author suggests is analogous to me saying: hey the NBA is getting way too complicated, why doesnt every team do like the lakers and just give kobe the ball. Slate please look into hiring some of the authors at footballoutsiders.com to write future analysis; hell, even Peter King seems to think about what he write more than Weintraub.

I totally agree with this point. The Patriots offense is really complicated, as is the Cover 2 scheme. Why not bring in some of the Football Outsiders or some people that actually follow this stuff if you are going to have people write about the X's & O's?

Seriously, this is ridiculous:

Not only is it that few if any other teams have the equivalent of a Moss/Welker combo to work with, Brady has ALL FREAKIN' DAY to throw the ball. Throw deep, then mix it up with the slots, eh? Gosh, why didn't the KC Chiefs think of that? They might have beaten Denver last week if they had "kept it simple" by encouraging their QB's to stay upright long enough to throw the ball.
