but if you're in canada, or outside u.s...
by taiwanjason

it seems the dailyshow.com website doesn't work for me, and the clips embedded in the slate site just show me the ads. it's likely because i'm in canada, where the comedycentral clips have never worked anyway. but lately, recent daily show/colbert report clips have been available via ctv/comedy network (canadian) broadband sites.

but what's the point of making these youtube-style clips available if only users in the u.s. can watch them? doesn't that seem a little short-sighted? isn't youtube's global reach the whole point of posting things on the internet? wouldn't advertisers be the slightest bit interested in international mouse-clicks?

of course, it could just be an oversight or error in the site, but i doubt it...

Apparently I'm in the same boat. None of the links in the article worked for me and after fiddling with the website for a while I've just had to give up because none of the clips work. I only get advertisements.

If this is tv on the web then we have a problem.

It is not just comedy central. None of the streamed video from the US networks (NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX) work in Canada. While they all offer full episodes of programs, we Canadians are not permitted to watch them.

I do not understand why, since we can watch the programs on these networks in Canada.

actually, i just had an idea. this restriction would also affect lots of u.s. forces overseas. lots of them have access to these shows via afn (armed forces network), but if they lived off the base (in europe, say, or south korea), then possibly their int'l internet access would DENY them their america fix. surely they can allow international access to their full episodes and other content...you know, to support the troops.

i'm sure it's some complicated u.s./canadian agreement on ad revenue. the same reason the super bowl doesn't show the famous american market ads, and i think even ford/frito lay/mcdonalds/etc all must produce local adverts for canada...and the same reason pandora radio had to shut off access to canadians...but this is the internets, people!
(time to learn more about proxy servers, i guess.)
