Show a senator quote, mug at the camera, repeat.
by Jhoh Cable

Doesn't seem like it would be really hard to find people to "write" that.

It does seem like it should be easy, but we have proof that, alas, it’s not. <link>

I'm surprised that the "genius" Mr. Stewart isn't writing the show himself to keep it on the air -- isn't he supposed to be the driving force?

Oh well, the show will fold after the elections next year in any case. Stewart only makes fun of Republicans and conservatives and when only Democrats are in office, he won't have any material.

We all know making fun of democrats doesn't work thanks to Fox's "Half Hour Newshour".

Oh the Fox effort was poorly executed, but the four most financially successful standup comics in the U.S. today, Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engvald, Ron White and Larry the Cable Guy all regularly make fun of, if not Democrats directly, certainly a lot of the left-wing and liberal viewpoints expressed by some Democrats. All human beings have foibles that are humorous to other human beings, regardless of political party.

They can make fun of democrats, too.

The overall lesson is that, today, political "humor" is not cool. Period. It's not the 90s anymore, it's over. Let's get on the BALL.

Have you never heard Jon Stewart on Bill Clinton? They skewer Democrats, too. It's just that, lately, the material on the Republicans has been writing itself.

And Jon Stewart won't write the show himself while there's a strike going on because he supports labor. I know it's an old-fashioned idea, but, one-upon-a-time, most Americans supported the working guy.

And the four most successful comedians do more than "Show a senator quote, and mug for the camera." Of course liberals and conservatives can be funny and insightful when the make fun of the other guy's foibles. It's just harder than it looks to do it well.

DeaH - Supports the working guy? Give me a break. These are not migrant farm workers. This is a battle between rich people and really, really mega rich people. Most Americans still support the "working guy", because most Americans are the "working guy and gal".

Jon Stewart and the "smugettes" are not going to get a lot of sympathy from the average person. I'm not saying they don't have a legitimate beef with the big media companies, but it hardly concerns me that the writers of Desperate Housewives can't afford a bigger house in Malibu.

I will say that a lot of politicians are probably in no hurry to see the strike end. Who ever occupies the White House gets the lion share of abuse. Out of office for almost seven years and Clinton BJ jokes are still easy money for "comedy writers", if you call this writing.

TJ: A) I agree with your post.

B) If I didn't agree with your post, it would be worth reading for the word "smugettes" which will now become a permanence in my vocabulary.

Do you know the average salary?

So, you know what Daily Show writers make? Most writers are not rich. And do you really think the middle class doesn't count as part of the working class?

Yes, Jon Stewart supports labor. In film and television, writers are labor. In agriculture, field workers are labor. In the auto industry, factory workers are labor. Labor produces.

The fact is that, while there have been real problems with unions in America, the systematic undermining of unions correlates strongly with the loss in real rages across the entire middle class. The millionaires are outriders. The majority of writer are low-income to middle class laborers.

If Jon Stewart (and in other areas, Warren Buffet and Bill Gates) sympathizes with the working guy, that speaks well of them. Unenlightened selfishness, despite all the great press it's gotten in the last few decades, is not a good thing.
