Puleeese! Give me strength: if the coffee shop is busy and understaffed, everyone gets discriminated against. The service drops, orders are messed up and problems begin. I have found, being a male that the lady servers flirt with me when times are slack. The 'gang' loves to have a "verbal te-ta-te" when both men and women are working and the service becomes exceptionally good. If it is just guys serving we can also joke. Same with the ladies.
The key always lies in management! Employee attitude follows and service goes up or down with the variables (to include the fact that these folks are 'slammed' with 20 customers waiting for their first cup of Jo' in the morning). Believe me, customers can really be obnoxious!!
Anyone ordering a Foo-foo drink deserves slow service if the crew is slammed, the shop is overcrowded and low fat marshmallows cannot be found for love or money.
My take: Baristas are doing the very best they can under the circumstances and the only customer that is discriminated against is the "jerk(ess)" who cannot make up their mind on what to drink after waiting in line for 20 minutes.
