I moved from the US to the Netherlands a year ago. Here you have your own plastic crate or reinforced bag that you take to the store with you. If you forget it, you can buy a bag ( bigger and stronger than the typical US bag) for about $.50.

Seems a simple solution to the problem rather than creating brand new polymers, new recycling streams, etc, etc.

there are stores now doing this. One in rossville georgia. I am more concerned with the quality of the fruit and vegtable and the vitamin and mineral content than the bag.

Personally I don't see a problem with that strategy. Simple question though - how do shopping habits compare and would that work here in the states?

I shop for 3 days at a time, so a scheme like you suggest would work for me. But I know a lot of people who shop for a week at a time - I can't see a soccer mom lugging around a dozen crates to hold her stuff in.

Not to mention the cost of the bags is already included in the total cost of the groceries - charging at the register on top of that would be double charging.
