Less expected???
by ThunderLady

Why would it surprise anyone that most women have a strong preference for a man of their own race? It is an innate instinct for all species (be it man or beast) to be "with their own kind".

And how exactly do you know what is an "innate instinct?" How do you know that racial preferences aren't just a form of cultural learning, and one that will be overcome as/if the human race continues to develop? When it comes to human beings, calling anything an "innate instinct" is just an intellectually lazy way of justifying the status quo.

absolutely. racial preferences have nothing whatsoever to do with "innate instinct", just social conditioning. if you want to talk about innate instincts for same-kind mate selection, then you'll need to explain the total lack of breed preference among dogs (or how else did we get all those cock-a-poos?).

when it's repeated among other primate species and it's common among all human cultures?

yeah, innate.

unless you think evolution stops at the neck...

It is instinct to be with one's own kind... to be with a human and not a chimp. I think the instinct applies to species, not different colors of the same species.

As a white guy who has dated women of all races other than white, I can say (for me at least) I am more inclined to be attracted to women who don't look like me. It seems like this should be instinctual (get some fresh genes in the mix), but there are a lot of men dating women that could be their sister so who knows?!

What other primate species select by race?
