Here it is, the one question that is at the heart of all the controversy:
Is global warming for real?
In other words, is Al Gore full of it? That's what it comes down to.
If Al Gore is correct, basic human decency dictates that we must do everything in our power to minimize the damage that global warming will cause. Economics isn't even a factor in the equation. When the heroes of World War 2 were called upon to make sacrifices for the good of mankind, did they ask how much or when? If they were alive today and they had reason to believe that global warming was a real threat, they would never consider pushing the burden onto their children. If our ancestors had been so self-centered, the human race would not be here today. It's a matter of natural selection. If we hide in the cave and watch the T-rex eat our offspring, we go extinct. As soon as we recognize that the future of our species is in danger, we need to fight tooth and nail until the threat has been eliminated. There is no other option but extinction. For thousands of years, this understanding has been a fundamental part of the human experience, whether global warming is real or not.
Al Gore gets it. There are no jobs on a dead planet. Life is infinitely more valuable than any economist can put a price on.
