Do we get graduate credits ...
by Antipasto
+6/-3 Reply

for learning how to USE this thing? This is incredibly different, especially for someone (like me) who is spoiled & never had
to learn HTML at work. Clearly, several functions are an improvement, like being able to see the post to which one
is responding... BUT who in Moira Redmond's sacred name
came up with those idiotic "tags" that seem designed more for "MySpace" citizens rather than grown-up SLATE posters.

And people, if you WANT your threads viewable as threaded, you can
do that; just click the THREADED box. whoever came up
with that fix, thank you for listening to us. A-p.

You're a quick-study, I'm sure you'll get accustomed to it in short order. There are certain new aspects that will take some getting used to, such as the rating system.

Nanny seems intent on giving thumbs down to practically everything, and that certainly points up the problem. I think I'm just going to go with the old method of reading people I know are worth reading, and ignoring the rating system completely.

Sounds good to me, Schmutzele. I think people are just goofing around with any form of 'ratings' system, don't you? I wonder if they have simply set the plus or minus rating ahead of time, automatically? I do like the HTML opportunity, for sure. Like you, I will simply ignore the ratings system & follow people whose posts I know -- like, for instance, you & yours.

As ever, A-P.

I think the rating system will become quite useful, there are many posts I simply think are funny, just generally agree with, or often, don't. This gives me the opportunity to kind of have my say without going into a long spiel or of having to conjure up the words and write a post (often awkward) to say somethng as simple as "I agree" "I don't agree" or "I like this" or "a good read", Of course, posters are going to use the system to gang up on posters they don't like - they already have - but, who cares....this whole arrangement has turned out to be so thoroughly well thought out, right down to the last detail..

Hi el and anti! Yeah I like the rating system to note good posts..but I think it can be abused by the more immature types. I'll go with the one who said by and large , I'll go like as I always have with interesting titles to guide me.

Hope all is well with you two!

Most Annoying Features, so far:
by Antipasto
  1. You can't see by your MBTU list whether you have any replies; makes it hard (awkward & time-consuming to respond to people who have responded to you;
  2. This tiny box to write in, surrounded by acres of wasted white space and HUGE annoying ads for Cisco;
  3. I don't like it that people can see who is giving them thumbs-up or thumbs-down; people are messing around with it already, expressing old OLD negative personal agendas -- so it's been misused already, on the first day. How about making the thumbs up, thumbs down ratings anonymous? That will lead to far more honest ratings;
  4. "imho, of course,"
  5. Hello, ladies.

And who IS Nanny McPhee?
by Antipasto
Whoever it is, 'she' is really having fun with the ratings. Of course, it's this kind of abuse that will lead to the function being dropped down the road. Oh well, plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose. At least, we can change or delete any thumbs down (or UP) ratings made in the heat of Fray-whatevering.

I've been wondering about that one ,too, anti. I give you one guess...though...best guess, it meows. ; )
You got another thumbs up from me, natch!

While I find navigation through threads difficult, I rather like what I have seen so far of the Fray Nouveau. The text editor is much better than the old one, though it is as quirky as Word has always been.

The threaded view arrives closed, so the user has to open each branch of the tree. I think a better solution might be a tree to the left of the flat view with the just posters names in the nodes (as they are called). One's current position in the thread could be highlighted as one cruises the flat view. Also, the tree could provided links to posts, which the current threaded view does not.

Whatever, I'm in this for the long haul, so I'll figure my way around eventually.

Customarily, as was customary in the past,

Bob

Well, who knows? It's some Merry Prankster, that's for sure. My guess is the old (way-old) poster "Star of Moira." The mischief will just never end, it seems.

Hi there Bobstah,

I'm mixed in my feelings & review about the new 'spruced-up' Fray. I think navigation is a BEAR and don't understand why they can't put (1) (2) and hit counts next to one's MBTU so we would know when we have a reply & want to respond to someone. I love the HTML formatting being built-in, for sure but dislike the tiny, TINY screen. (who needs all that white space, what's the point of that? I see that you have larger text in your msg. reply to me, so maybe the problem is in MAC, where I have not yet been able to figure out how to enlarge the FONT size. Are you composing in WORD and then posting on here
by any chance? That seems like an awful lot of extra steps but maybe I'll give it a try.
Two screens open, is that right?

Customarily indeed, Auntie Chowdah Pasto

How is that EASY, Jimmy? It's FOUR extra steps, no?

You mean to tell me, you're keeping two screens open, one just to READ someone else's post, then you're going into WORD just to write your reply, then you're hitting PASTE to get your WORD document reply into a thread?

FOUR EXTRA STEPS -- how is THAT an improvement?That's a hell of a time investment, Jim -- they should be paying us for our time, in that case. I just won't do that, it's not worth it. Talk later, Auntie P.
