This is in response to Dumbed Down. I too am a highly intelligent and very smart person compared to some of the people I've worked with but not all of us have heard of sites such as the Craiglist, Youtube, Myface, Myspace, etc. etc. etc. until some one else was talking about it. The first time I had heard of Myspace was when some teenage girl was molested after giving a complete stranger her cell phone number and met with him at the school she attended. So it's not "preposterous" that your co-workers sister didn't know about this Craiglist. Not all of us "cruise" or or have even heard of the some of these sites just because you do. Preposterous you say? No way.

If you haven't heard of Youtube or Myspace or Craigslist, you have just revealed to your friends and co-workers that you are an ignoramus. It is probably prudent to nod quietly and check out the site on your own to see what the buzz is about.

It is wonderful that you are highly intelligent, but failure to keep up with the latest and greatest trends in knowledge is not the mark of someone who is an intellectual. Knowledge moves fast, and those who stand still, including those who misspell Craigslist and Facebook, aren't intelligent in my book. It shows that you are way behind the curve.

However, you do make a good point...not everyone knows every popular website, and part of the fun is discovering new ones. It is obnoxious to call someone ignorant...but sometimes a blatant missed reference calls into question someones intelligence. Or perhaps I should say, intellectual curiosity and rigor.

No, not knowing about sites where mostly people under age 25 (and people looking for sex with those well under 25) go reveals more about your age and availability to surf the web till the wee hours of the morning.
