Disrespectful headline

The piece on conception using sperm donated by now-dead servicemen is an interesting and appropriate piece. But I really think the headline is disrespectful to all -- the donors, the mothers, and even the readership.

You may have noticed that if there is any possible way to spin a prurient, sophomoric title for the topic, they will do so. Just another in a long series.

Iwas not offended. This is another example of taking things way to seriously

As someone who lost a friend in Iraq two years ago, I thought it was distasteful to pull the "gross-dead-guy-sperm" angle. There is a reason the funeral industry uses words like deceased that have softer connotations than dead. With the group of people referred to in the post having been so recently laid to rest in service of their country I think a softer tone would have adequately described the situation and called attention to the issues raised in the post, not the wording. Precious little is more serious than dying for your country.

The war is serious, dying for your country is serious, having babies is serious, but headlines don't have to be. When you laugh you can't be afraid. Get over it.
it's about appropriateness

that headline wouldve been fine for reading The Onion, but it did seem purposefully incendiary and snide... which for something dealing with dead soldiers is rather disrespectful. of course, lately, that's what i'm coming to expect from Slate.... Aimlessly conflagatory headlines.

Can laugh plenty, thank you, and have no need to "get over" anything. But let me throw something back at you -- mature adults usually have an understanding of when it's appropriate to make jokes.

Just because you CAN make a joke, doesn't always mean you SHOULD.

Headlines should reflect the content of the article. If it's a humorous article, make it humorous. If it's dealing with a serious -- can I say DEADLY serious -- subject, then it too should reflect that.
