That's not a crisis,

that's a fashion sense caught up with marketing Nike and not the U.S. Eventually, something'll stick.

A uniform crisis is the fact that baseball still requires its coaches to dress up as players. What is with that anyway? Nothing gives an elderly man less respect then letting him dress up in tights, show his gut hanging over the bottom half of his uniform, and putting him in a little cap. If they weren't in the dugouts, they'd be suspected of having broken away from the local nursing home staff while on a field trip.

Imagine how bizaare it would be if this were required in other sports. Football? Who wouldn't want to see Andy Reid suited up and looking for a place to hang his clipboard? Basketball? Oh yeah. Gregg Popovich would look good in those shorts. And of course, ice hockey coaches would look great, but they'd have to expand the boxes so there'd be room for the padding.

Let's call an end to this right now. Let the boys of summer be boys, but let's let the management look like men.

Which reminds me of a George Carlin bit (and I paraphrase here): "Woody Hayes wears a baseball hat when he coaches football. Can you imagine if Billy Martin wore a football helmet when he coached baseball? They would shut him away, man!"

one reason baseball coaches need uniforms is that, unlike football and basketball coaches, they actually participate in the game as first and third base coaches. it's mostly tradition, but there is some practical reason that they need to dress in uniforms that allow athletic movement.

if you want to make fun of a sports uniform, what about cricket! And what's up with the little huts that the soccer players sit in? And why do they have to wear vests if they're not playing in the game? are they afraid the players will try to sneak on and off the field?

Nah.

Lots of coaches get physical on the sidelines of other games and a pair of shorts and a polo with the team logo serves them fine. The mufti? Crazy baby.

Cricket is disqualified on the grounds that anyone who plays it is insane and doesn't care about uniforms (and by the way, it IS played where i live in the states. Indeed, I belong to a cricket club).
