It's a textbook case of why network television can't yet operate at the level of "The Sopranos" or "Mad Men" or "Six Feet Under" (in its good years.) The writing is surface, the characters are exactly who they are, etc.
"Six Feet Under" is relevant, of course, because that's where Peter Krause came from, and you can practically feel his frustration oozing through the screen playing with this lesser material. He used to be written smarter, poor guy.
Still, the show is very pretty (HDTV!), as are the people (a network requirement -- that Feldstein gal, hey now!) and Donald Sutherland and Jill Clayburgh as the family leaders bring back memories of their 70's movie stardom.
I'll watch it, sometimes. Like "Boston Legal." It's entertaining enough for free.
