It's just not that clever, funny, etc.
by martingreene

OK, I get the joke about how many martinis relate to how many breasts, but it's just not that interesting.I'm waiting for No-Star's limerick, for a little comic relief.

Here's a bar joke I heard. A very well-dressed elderly man enters a bar, sits down next to a very pretty twentyish babe, and offers to buy her a drink. Sure thanks. He look at her, smling, and asks "Do I come here often?"

OK, you don't think the joke is very interesting. So what do you think about the poem?

Hi, Martin. I feel the poem is about breast cancer -- check my top post on that. It is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so the timing is right.

It's also a bit ...

joyless, when I had hoped for some real fun, given the title.

Reminds me of way back when a certain long-time female poster on this Fray, started a poetry joke contest. I think it might be time to resuscitate that never-really-realized Tradition, no? I agree with your assessment, also & I really am enjoying the limerick thread, with hope that it will grow & expand, just like teenage girls were promised about their breasts with the "Mark Eden Chest Enhancer" years ago!

:-) Also, pls. check your In-Box. Thx.

The poem's not meant to be either...

If anything, it's a slam against what many men think of as both clever and funny (and the men are welcome to it). In that it has a certain cleverness of its own, but the in-jokes of the female couple are serious ones.

Yes, Martin, what do you think of the poem?

I can't see how a poem like this rises to the top of the submission pile. It's just not very good.

Try again, Slate.

I don't like the poem in the least way. Whatever it's relevance (that word!) to breast cancer awareness, I find it awkward, and utterly without saving grace.

Now your poem posted just the other day (excuse, forget title) was clever and as I promised, something I'll want to read to people next time I do a Pinsky Poem (my Poetry Circle) gathering.

Worst thing you can tell a comic who has failed to tell a joke well: "not funny." Current poem is neither funny nor compelling in respect to the matter of breast cancer.

Hi Mary Ann. The poem leaves me cold. I don't think it stands up to serious discussion, and we continue to find ourselves embarrassed by what we see on Tuesdays.

Remember the poem about the American trying to learn Japanese (Gaijin, something)? That was a poem.

Our poetry on this page generally superior to the Tuesday stuff. P.S. Paul Breslin has a book coming out, which will contain the poems he has posted here, plus other stuff he's done. He is the real thing.

See also Paul Guest and his English Department colleague Elliot, who last name I forgot. But I bought both their books. Good is good.
