The third person
by szkott

I hate it when people refer to themselves in the third person.

"That's music to the ears of The Lantern, a devoted meat-eater who weeps at the very thought of life without bacon cheeseburgers and curry goat."

I don't even know what to make of it. Do we constantly have to be reminded of the name of the persona writing the column?

Yeah, it seems he doesn't want to associate with himself, and given the statement, I can see that.

I'll tell you what the world needs far far less of: articles supposedly about veganism that are really about the need of the meat-loving author to rationalize. They always throw their meat love in there somewhere and to me it always sounds lame, defensive, rationalizing.

Being vegan just isn't that hard, and I would eat meat or dairy or seafood if it was NECESSARY in any wise, but it isn't, which is good, because I do find it distasteful to even think about.

I think it's old school journalism 101, that the author is not supposed to refer to himself in the first person. An especially stupid rule for an opinion column, and one that causes all those awkward "this author _______" sentences.

Oh well, go to lunch, have a brautwurst w/ kraut and forget about it.

I don't know if it is difficult being a vegan, but it sure is a bitch trying to accomodate one. I'm sure it depends on where you live in the the US, but there are many places where it is difficult getting vegan take-out, at least with any variety. We had some IT folks from corporate visiting for months to work on a project, one was a vegan and ordering lunch became an issue.

No meat, No dairy - No shit! What a pain in the ass!
