Any spelunkers in the group here?
by Jen01

Several novice cave explorers are missing and presumed to be in a cave near Austin, Texas.

I have been in several caves in that area of Texas, but always with a guide. Once I was in Natural Bridge Caverns south of Austin, with a class of 4th graders.......and the guide passed out. The lights were all out behind us and ahead of us and the switches were hidden, so we just stayed put and waited for help.

I am too claustrophobic to go through the 18 inch opening and crawl around in the dark like these kids were doing.

I hope they find them and bring them out safely.

Howdy, Dawg, ya sweety.

I enjoy caves too....... I've been to Carlsbad Caverns 5 times (that's a big'n).

But I've taken school classes to all the ones around San Antonio (as well as gone to them on my own).

I would never go into one that's not a guided or semi-guided tour though I have known some amateur spelunkers in Texas.

That's cool........camping in one of Daniel Boone's caves!

From what I have heard, the group is not very experienced and of course, their cell phones won't work from the cave and passages (if ya can call a 18" opening a passage).

This is kind of like every time we get torrential rains in this area and even with warning lights and road closures and drivers still try and make it through high water by driving around the signs. The City of Austin has begun to charge those people the cost of the rescue operation in the form of a fine for, "BEING STUPID IN A NO STUPID ZONE".

Makes ya wonder what some people use to think with......when they drive into a flooded street when there are even signs to say not to go there.

I feel they'll get these kids out okay, but I am way too claustrophobic to call an 18" opening a "passage".

AUSTIN, Texas - A group of college students who didn't emerge for more than a day from a cave they were exploring have been found safe, an emergency worker said Sunday.

The two women and one man were found in a 500-foot-long crawl space about the width of a sewer pipe, said Frank Urias, division commander of Austin-Travis County emergency medical services. They are expected to be pulled from the cave in a few hours.

"The victims are uninjured, our crews are safe; it doesn't get any better than this," Urias said.

The three University of Texas students had gone into a narrow passage near Austin called Airman's Cave on Saturday morning and told friends to call for help if they weren't back by midnight, said Austin Fire Department Lt. Matt Cox.

Glad to hear it, Boogie!

It's always good to have a happy ending.
