closers
by torgo

First off, I love how Slate tries to show how hip it is by displaying articles that think differently. Now, here's an article lambasting an organization for thinking and acting differently from the norm.

Way to go.

Closers are the most overrated of baseball pitchers. The Save is the most overrated of baseball statistics. Obviously, living in New York, one sees the value of a good closer such as Mariano Rivera. But do not let that blind you. The closer mostly has to pitch one inning. If your team is ahead by 3 runs, then you can afford to give up one run a good portion of the time. Cleveland's best two relievers come out early. If they shut down the opposing team, then the closer can afford to be not as strong. Is it an experiment? Yes. Has it really been done before? Not this deep in the playoffs. I'm itching to see it happen.

Park's assessment that Borowski is weak is based on a single statistic, his ERA. Even Park notes that there are other measures in which he fairs better. One might also note that the high ERA is largely due to a single very bad outing. Borowski's the man, the Indians will stick with him and they will be wise to do so.
