New England Sports
by Arkady

It's a good time to be a fan of sports in Massachusetts. The Red Sox finished the regular season tied for the league's best record, and just swept their first-round opponent easily. The Patriots are undefeated, coming off another convincing victory, and are currently favorites to win the Super Bowl. With Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce as the core of the team, the Celtics are being spoken of as a championship possibility for the first time in years. In college sports, the Boston College Eagles are undefeated and ranked fourth in the nation -- tied for their highest ranking ever. If it weren't for the Bruins being awful, it would be tough to beat this year. At this point, it's possible to speculate realistically about Massachusetts teams winning each of the three big pro sports championships along with the NCAA Division IA football championship.

I'd love to see the Red Sox in the World Series again and the Patriots in the Superbowl. But as good a year as Boston College is having, I doubt they will make it to the BCS Championship game - but anything is possible.

Arkady.... Even saying it could jinx it. I don't follow the games too much, but even I know that just mentioning the possibility is deadly..... I'm a New Englander... We thrive on the dissappointment of just hoping....

Hehe. Well, if it makes you feel better, Ellen, I'll predict they all collapse.

Patriots? You mean those cheaters?

Very Sad.

If BC wins out, they should make it into the BCS game -- it would be pretty hard to ignore a perfect record and ACC championship, with the relatively tough schedule they face. But it's hard seeing them winning out, and even one loss will almost certainly move them out of BCS Championship contention.

I could see the Red Sox, Patriots, and even the Eagles playing for the title. The Celtics, though, are too thin. It's great to have three superstars, but they don't have a point guard, center, or bench.

You've got to be jazzed about the Eagles, though. That quarterback might grab a Heisman, as well.

Eh. If Vegas placed the over/under on teams trying to steal the signals of the opposing team at 31.5, I'd still take the over. It's not that the Patriots are cheaters, they just aren't sneaky enough.

Who on their remaining schedule poses a serious threat? Obviously, you can't always predict who will be a threat (USC, meet Stanford), but I'd have to think BC will be the favorite in every game they play until the bowl season, where you know better than anyone they are tough.

With the Celtics, it will come down to keeping them healthy. If the three can stay physically intact, and learn to work together, they should be able to overcome how thin the bench is. After all, they've got some good young athletes to help fill out the roster -- guys who can be excellent role players if not called on to do the heavy lifting. Chances are, though, the stars won't end up meshing that well, or one of them will get a nagging injury, and they won't be able to play up to potential.

Regardless, they'll need a point guard to step up. I think that with Kevin Garnett at power forward, they don't need a great center. But somebody has got to distribute the ball. I don't think they'll do well if Allen has to act as the de facto point guard, because they could quickly become one-dimensional.

I'm very jazzed about the Eagles, but it's hard to know how good they are, since they've yet to play any great teams. They've played two really good teams, but not any top-ten types. Matt Ryan sure has looked good, though. I had season tickets for years, so I've seen a lot of good QBs at BC (Matt and Tim Hasselbeck, Glenn Foley, and Paul Peterson were all better than the national media ever gave them credit for being, when they were at BC). But Ryan's the best from my era... taking that title from Matt Hasselbeck. Probably the best since Flutie. Barring a bad injury, at his present pace he should be a first-round draftee, even if he misses out on te Heisman.

How about Virginia Tech (5-1), Miami (4-2), Maryland (4-2) and Florida State (4-1) ? They have some tough games ahead of them yet.

Not cupcakes, but I would imagine BC will be the favorite in all of those games. I watched Miami against OU, and they weren't very good. That whole program is a mess. They looked better against Texas A&M, but A&M isn't a good team, either.

V-Tech hasn't impressed me much. I don't know much about Maryland, and the only game of Florida State's I've seen was them getting handled by Clemson.
