new format
by henrytucker

I'm not a huge fan of the new format of In Other Magazines. It's one ofmy favorite sections to read in Slate, but the new format seems to cover less ground than previously. The point formerly was to give the highlights of the current issues of other respected periodicals, which was useful. The new style, which emphasizes superlatives (that one magazine can recieve more than one of), is definitely more novelty oriented, and lacking the sheer volume of information found before.

For instance, this week covered only Time, The Economist, and the NYT Magazine. This is miniscule compared to previously, when there were at least 5-6 separate publications covered. Also, it was nice having the photos of the covers on hand foreasy reference to determine if one currently has said issue.

I recommend changing it back. The new format is a pointless attempt at conveying which magazines "satisfy" certain criteria, which is both useless to one who is interested in what certain magazines have to say during the current publication period and wholly unobjective on a journalistic stand point. Give us (more, compared to now) information; we will decide which ones are best.

I too join in the objections to the new format and the call to return to the old form.
