Women in combat?
by lduvall

Seems to me that at times there have been women in combat in other countries - Viet Nam comes to mind, at least among the ranks of the guerillas.

I have a problem giving the police officer a medal for doing her job - unless there is solid evidence that she did more that "her job". But heros and medals sometimes come easy these days I guess.

To be fair, not everybody can have your record in that kind of high-intensity close-quarters armed combat.

Say WHAT? She got shot in both her arms and legs, and still managed to take down the perp with 4 shots landed. Which part of that is 'easy'?

Iduval, I wouldn't trust you with my life or anything else. You don't seem to be aware of what this individual did.

Here I go with my speech that makes everyone hate me...

Cops sign up for their jobs. They acknowledge that they want to be put into a situation where they might be shot at and/or killed. They accept the responsibility to act in a swift and decisive manner to put to an end to situations where deadly force may be required. If they don't want to do this, they can quit.

Cops jobs are not that dangerous. The number of deaths per 1000 police officers in this country is only slightly higher than the number of deaths per 1000 EMS works and significantly lower than the number of deaths per 1000 firefighters. As far as work related deaths, cops are not even in the top ten categories as far as frequency is concerned. People go along with cop's statements that their jobs are dangerous because they don't want to do the cops' job.

If cops don't want to be shot at. If cops don't want to have to intervene in life threatening situations. If cops don't want to do their jobs, then they should quit and get jobs in the private sector where they actually have to produce something, like most people do. Like most people, cops should not get medals for showing up and doing their jobs. EMS workers and firefighters do not demand medals for doing their jobs, as cops do, nor do they bitch and whine about how hard their jobs are, like cops do. Yet, their jobs are similar and similarly lethal to cops' jobs. In short, this cop, nor any other, deserves a medal or any other recognition for doing her job.
