Are we "denying" Hetro AIDS?
by Don Schenk
-4 Reply

The "scientific" scare-mongering about heterosexual AIDS being the next epidemic never panned out.

The Earth has been, if anything, getting cooler since 1998; and it was several degrees warmer during the "Medieval Optimum" period about a thousand years ago.

What people are denying is the use of "science" that isn't proven for scare-mongering. Such "science" isn't scientific.

Scientific scare-mongering? An example of this would be nice. And, why are glaciers around the world melting at alarming rates? Seriously.

"The "scientific" scare-mongering about heterosexual AIDS being the next epidemic never panned out."

Aids killed about 2 million people in 2007. It would have been a lot worse here in the US if we hadn't collectively woken up to the dangers and began using condoms etc.

Do you often just make up facts, or only on the internet?

1998 is GW deniers favorite year, because the was a very strong El Nino, which resulted in very high temperatures. If you take a realistic looks at temperatures over the past decades, you'll see a warming trend, with a very noticeable spike in 1998.

Have you read the news stories about how widespread AIDS is among heterosexuals? Of course not, because it isn't. Remember, we're a nation of 300 million, and even so I guess the "AIDS killed about 2 million people in 2007" figure includes people in third world countries who never caught HIV, but can still be diagnosed as having an "Acquired Immune Definciency Sndrome" from other causes.

Are you claiming that it's not common knowledge that the entire Earth was several degrees warmer during the "Medieval Optimum" period about a thousand years ago, when the Norsemen farmed in Greenland? I minored in history, not politically useful fantasy.

And as for what a co-founder of The Weather Channel had to say in The Old Farmer's Almanac,

Yes, I'm claiming you are full of it.

Don Schenk appears to be a wingnut. Cherrypicking facts to fit his own, personal worldview. Did you know that works on the Bible also?

I guess it never occurs to people like Don that the efforts to educate the world on AIDS may have averted the global epidemic. Africa proves heterosexual AIDS can be an epidemic. The AIDS epidemic among gay males and needle drug users also shows that cultural and personal factors play a large role in the spread of the disease.

But does Don want to look at all that? Noooo....he prefers to assume scientists are always stupid and wrong and that he is always right.

I may "cherrypick" facts, but they do remain facts, despite your best attempt to deny them.

AIDS, a syndrone, may be heterosexual in Africa, but not HIV.

"AIDS, a syndrone, may be heterosexual in Africa, but not HIV."

At first, I was going to ask for a link to back this up but realized you wouldn't respond any more than you have provided data for your laughable MWP assertion.

Instead, let me point out that cherrypicking facts is in fact a perfectly valid reason to ignore them.

amen Blueshift.

Perhaps Don is implying that HIV is not the cause of AIDS in Africa but rather SIV.

You are exhibiting exactly what the authors are discussing, particularly when it comes to AGW.

Like the vaccination denialists, you are looking at short term, statistically non-significant events (children's ostensible mental impairment) and ignoring the full systemic view (children's likelihood of reaching the age of majority). The earth's thermal system is highly "noisy". So a plateau in temperature, even a short term drop in it, is not meaningful.

Nor is your claim about HIV in heterosexuals accurate at all.

FACTS are that the fastest growing population of HIV infected individuals in the USA are heterosexuals and people under 25 account for 50% of the new infections.

But hey, as Ronald Reagan Said... Facts are stupid things

HIV among heterosexuals is mainly spread through needles; there has yet to be an outbreak of HIV spread through women because of a sexual encounter with a bisexual male, which is what the original scare-mongering was about.

Don, you must be certifiable. Hello! No, the entire continent of Africa is not composed of gay men. And you are in blithe denial of the current outbreak of HIV+ among the wives/girlfriends of men released from prison in the USA. (I have first-hand occupational knowledge of this),

HIV among heterosexuals is mainly spread through needles

To paraphrase Family Feud...Science Says... YOUR WRONG!!!

Hetero MEN tend to contract HIV from needle sharing.

Hetero WOMEN tend to contract HIV from their male partners via unprotected sex.

By the way, a SCIENTIFIC argument is that African AIDS is caused by TB, not HIV. "AIDS" is the "acquired immune defincency syndrome," a syndrome that has more than one cause.
