Toilet Seats? Why is there even a debate???
by Vegemighty

I really don't understand why anyone has a conflict about toilet seats. Men want it up and women want it down? That's nonsense.

Put the LID down, people. Do you really think things look neater when they are open? Whether the seat is up or down, do you really think that seeing skid marks improves a bathroom's look?

It's the lid that's the issue, not the seat.

Of course this guy is probably too big a jackass to close the lid too. But anyone who wants the seat down but the lid up deserves no sympathy.

Yeah, and it's REALLY difficult and taxing to use your hands to put it up or put it down.

Public toilets generally do not have lids.

good point but public toilets don't usually have lids. The lids cost more.

Fair point, though the LW gave the impression that this is a small bathroom that's appropriate for two people. A lid on those is not uncommon.

But if this is the case, then the LW needs to put on her big girl pants - this is the most ridiculous example of insensitivity ever.

That said, the fray on this topic is showing a fair number of women who DO seem to care about the seat at home.

Lid down...

...So the pets don't drink the water or fall in, that's why we do it in my household.

Recently some people on this board expressed the opinion that leaving the lid down was rude because then the next person to use the bathroom might get a nasty surprise when they lifted the lid and found floaters or something. It didn't make much sense to me(any nasty surprises will be there whether the lid is down or not) but the sentiment did seem to get some approval from some other posters. Botton line.....no matter what you do, you're going to piss SOMEONE off.

If you live alone, do what you want. If you live with someone else, have a brief discussion about it and be considerate. This applies to the women as well as the men though.....the burden for being considerate is not all on the man.

Wow. That's absurd AND disgusting. At least the lid helps confine the smell just a bit when you leave a surprise.

In fact, if you're going to leave something behind (mea culpa), the decent thing to do is to close the lid and tape a "Do Not Disturb" note to the top of it while you go out and find a plunger to deal with it.

Actually the lid should indeed be left down before flushing because otherwise there's an aerosol effect of spraying gems around the room. It's a hygiene issue, not a courtesy one.

I am in agreement - the lid protects the john and does not reveal which number someone just went.

However, I hear from girls it is rude and aggravating to leave the seat up because they have to put it down, but they never say it is rude and aggravating to put the lid down so they have to lift it up. I have never understood this delta.
