Chinese birth control
by david wayne osedach
You would think that China with its enormous population would also have enormous problems with sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancies. Why is that not the case?

From the article, it sounds like abortions are one method of choice. Out in the boondocks, exposing unwanted children is another possibility.

As for the STD's.

a) they may have them but not discuss them.

b) they may not be as promiscuous as westerners. they could have lots of sex with one person instead of having sex with the football team or any girl that is drunk enough to say yes. Some people in western society have sex with *thousands* of people. That tends to spread the disease around quickly.

c) certain STD's may not be widely spread yet.

d) america had the pill/disco related sex boom and that exploded our std spread. (not thousands per person, but one person could have sex with 30+ people per year-- that may not be happening in china yet.)

Some good hypotheses maxo.

I'll add the focus on lifelong monogamy which is more often found in Asian cultures. Not that it is perfect, of course. But they are going to have significantly fewer sexual partners in life than the semi-polygamous European-type cultures and far fewer than in the wide-open polygamy of sub-saharan Africa.
