Commies took over the environmental movement

The environmental movement was commandeered or hijacked by communists, socialists, and anti-capitalists after the USSR fell. Saving the rain forest doesn't serve their agenda as well (global governance and wealth redistribution) as global warming. Basically using the made up "crisis" to push their agenda.

This has forced true environmentalists to refocus their offers on more local problems such as local biodiversity. In addition environmentalists in the past have been at odds with numerous groups, but now that their movement has been compromised (nationally) they are partnering with previous enemies. For the longest time hunters and environmentalists have been at odds, but now many groups from both sides formed alliances under the umbrella of conservation.

That's not specifically correct.

Idiots took over Greenpeace. But there is a large difference between a concerned environmentalist and a zealot... In the same way there's a difference between a typical Christian and a snake handling apentacostle that shoots at gynocologists. It has nothing to do with communist/capatilist economic theory debates. It has to do with extreme passion combined with limited understanding. There are environmentalists that protest wind power because it kills a few bats, and protest CSP solar because the shade from the mirrors might damage the natural ecosystem of the desert... There's just no sense of big picture or comprehension of the issues at large. Speaking of comprehension of the issues at large, you sound like a complete fool and a joke of an anacronysm when you refer to global warming concerns as a "made up" crisis... Clearly the environmental movement is not the only place where misguided fools fight loundly based on a completely false understanding of science. ;)

Certainly the environmental movement applauded the collapse of the Soviet Union and the eastern block. Free people do not chose to foul their nests. What they do is pass things like the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, require polluters to clean up environmental damage, preserve open spaces from development, and require responsible use of natural resources. All of which were called socialistic, communistic, intrusions into the market place restricting the freedom of the wealthy. Any and every attempt at international cooperation on virtually every issue, since the begining of the League of Nations, has been considered a step torward one world government. There is no legitimate evidence of people making up science as part of some conpiracy to deprive the wealthy of their rights. These paranoid delusions did not just crop up after the cold war, they actually predate it.

Environmentalism has always been focused on local issues. Wether it was stopping an incinerator, cleaning up contaminated sights, preserving wetlands, starting recycling programs, the vast majority of environmental activism has always and will always be local. Fact is the hunter, fisherman and environmentalist is often one in the same.

It seems at Copenhagen that may come to pass.
