Gen X "went Galt"
by sigmond

They just called it "slacking".

You know, if you read about how she grew up under communism, it's a wonder that she could even use a freaking typewriter. Imagine having your family business taken "for the good of the people" only to see 2million+ of your countrymen (and yourself) go hungry?( Imagine simply going hungry. Try it some time, skip lunch and see how you do.)

Trust me, you'd be calling them "looters" as well. You would think that that might inform the kids of today with their Che shirts, their Michael Moore movies, their Mao quoting Obama admin, but no...

Isn't if funny how there are like a million movies out of Hollywood about WW2 and those Nazis scum, but how many exist about what life was really like in the U.S.S.R.? Why is that? There's like...Dr. Zhivago and...?

A government starving off millions of its own countrymen, I guess there's just no drama in that.

Well, there was Reds. And The First Circle. And a half-decent TV miniseries about Stalin. But, no, there are nowhere near as many films showing the misery of post-revolutionary Russia as there are about WWII in Europe. Filmmakers are capitalists too, you know, and they try for films that will find audiences and generate money. It's possible you never saw or even heard of The First Circle (the film, I mean, not the novel), which ought to tell you something.

But, I'd guess we all agree that the Communist Revolution was a big step in the wrong direction for Russia, one that caused death and suffering for millions. This does not exactly elevate, or even explain, Rand's misanthropy.

Erm, no, people just starving a lot would be a very boring movie. Sorry.

And sorry you are one of those who think an intelligent mind which was twisted into hatred of humanity by Bolsheviks is a mind worth following and taking your life's philosophy from. You and Ayn think the masses are worthless parasites upon you, not recognizing how dependent your life is on them.

"You and Ayn think the masses are worthless parasites upon you, not recognizing how dependent your life is on them." I think that my point was that her life could be construed as a cautionary tale to lefties who think they have all of the answers. Sometimes, a lot of the time, things go horribly wrong bsharporflat. Watch your ankle when you step off of that high horse.

My horse ain't so high (ain't even a donkey ;- ) )

Cautionary tales, yes, if you see Rand that way then I have no beef.

Reds was about the communist movement in the United States. And The first circle most certainly wasn't made by Hollywood.

That's odd, because I'm sure I remember that over half of Reds was set in revolutionary Russia (with a side trip to Finland). Yes, the story did center around American reporter John Reed and it did include a fair amount of material on his Marxist beginnings in America. But the OP was saying there are few films (Hollywood or otherwise) about the miseries of that revolution. I acknowledged that there are few such films. I and another poster both pointed out why this might be true (Uh, filmmakers want to find audiences and make money, duh!).

The First Circle was an OK film based on an excellent book. I think the main problem with the film was that the book just isn't inherently cinematic. Film is a visual (and audial) medium; we want to see things happening onscreen, not be told what people are thinking. So it's not really an ethical defect that Horrible Hollywood has not shown enough of Soviet misery.

I think the Franco-Prussian war was far less covered by Hollywood. What's up with that?

Uh, yeah. Isn't it funny they make movies about a huge war that hundreds of thousands of Americans died fighting in. And how many movies are made about oppression in Burma right now? You think Hollywood might make movies that sell in the US? Movies with Americans as the main characters?

Even given that, there were plenty of movies about how bad the communists were. They just weren't set in the Soviet Union, they were set in the US and featured Russian spies.

1984, dude. Gorki Park. The Gulag Archipielago. One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Red Dawn.

If you want a good luck at how shitty things were before / during the Soviet Revolution, check out the Belarussian war movie "Come and See." One of the most... interesting movies I've ever seen.
