I guess you missed the reports about Virginia and New Jersey.

The MSNBC news headline this morning is Dem wins seat in heavily GOP area of New York. There was no mention of the other two races.

no republican candidate - the best hope for a dem victory?
by baltimore aureole

hermit - thanks for highlighting the democratic victory.

rahm emmanual must have been creaming in his pants when the republican candidate withdrew 2 days before the elelection and threw her support to the democrat, eh?

is this what it will take for democrats to prevail in 2010 - republicans withdraw, and endorse their opponents?

if an opposition candidate in a 3rd world election did this, and threw his support behind the candidate of the ruling junta, even jimmy carter might be persuaded to declare the election results neither fair or nor transparent.

but this is america, and obama isn't jimmy carter, for sure.

and your brains are totally fried already?

The fucking fascistozoid Palin candidate lost in the district where Dems never won in the century.

Get it, you fucking idiot.?

must have been ACORN fraud in NY23
by sashal12

Sarah Palin and Fred Thompson and Rush Limbaugh and Tim Pawlenty and George Pataki and the New York Post all endorsed Doug Hoffman

The teabaggers favorite son just lost a seat that Republicans have held for 140 years-no other explanation but 2 and a half blacks living in upstate NY went all ACORN on us.

I grew up in lily white Upstate New York. They had "Rush Rooms" in the restaurants and bars back when Limbaugh was in his hey day..and now they are every bit as confused.

Upstate New York is a strange state of mind. Explains much about why I am the way I am. When liberals are agitating in the rest of country, Upstate New Yorkers are solidly red state mentality(like during the Viet Nam War) arch conservative by majority...conversely, when conservatives are the majority( like now) Upstaters will lean the other way.

It's just the way they are.

No surpise at all. I always liked to go against the status quo ,in the very Norman Rockwellesque ,small town mentality I grew up in.

Lovely and pretty as it was to grow up in such affluence and idyllic surroundings, people in Upstate New York, by and large, are always by majority on the wrong side of history.

Hoffman still made a very strong showing (thanks to the Palin endorsement) and for coming in at the last minute.

who fantasize and theorisize about the politico/philosophical issues they have little or no clue about, say like deep assholes- BA or GW who think that the nightmares in their empty heads are reality and the actual facts on the ground do not exist..

i faced the totalitarians , communists and fascists for many years of my life in reality.

I learned to smell them from miles away even if they were doused in the expensive French parfume, I learned to hear them even when and if they were to talk about "freedom" and "liberties".

I did not have to read "1984"

I lived it...

It does not take long for me to spot a totalitarian/fascistic clowns like Beck or Palin, no matter how hard they can rape the brains of the idiots like BA or GW....and the pro-totalitarian crowds of teabaggers, who do not realize truly what they support-just an empty "1984"ish slogans of their betters

What I find interesting
by Angel of Dearth

is the democrats' propensity to use this as some sort of proof that Obama is doing great in the minds of America at large. Talk about cherrypicking your evidence!

That's right dems. It ain't that bad for you. VA and NJ were nothing. Now is the time to get cocky. Be confident. Be defiant! Screw those idiots who thought this was a referendum on Obama. Clearly it's all astroturf and it's high time you let those dummies in America know again.

You'll do just fine in 2010.

I think people are making too big of a deal out of this "century of republican rule" thing in NY-23. It wasn't as simple as that. The districts were always being redrawn, and numerous democrats were elected in what was called district 23 and also in areas that were sometimes but not always part of district 23. As late as 1993, areas that were once and are now again district 23 were held by a democrat, but it was called district 21 at the time. If you go back to 1980, when the same area was called district 23, a democrat also held the seat. If you look back over the last 100 years, democrats held the seat as often if not more often than republicans did.

It's a link to a wiki article, so it may not be entirely accurate.

American people rejected Nancy Pelosi's radical liberal agenda by expanding her party's share of the House of Representatives.

Democrats should postpone health care and other reforms until they have a support of 100% of Republican Senators.

Clearly.

Re: Democrat wins NY-23 First since 1852

that district routinely gives 60-70% of its general election votes to the Republican candidate .

Virginia and New Jersey demonstrated again, the off-year voting is skewed towards angry, mobilized conservatives and right-leaning independents.

A special House election in an off-year should have magnified the impact of such voters.

So the conditions were quite good for Hoffman.

It didn’t work. Palinites and Beckinites did not catch on among the GOP’s natural constituents in what is normally a safe district.

How likely is it that this brand of ultra RW fascistozoid politics will catch on elsewhere?

Thanks, hermit. Read your posts on the other Fray (BOTF Jr.) yesterday with interest. As one who grew up in New York State, I was posting similarly here yesterday and was glad to have my take on the District reaffirmed by one who lives there. Enjoy having a Dem. Representative for the first time in your life. SN/t.
