Hopefully, Maine voters are smarter than Cali voters.
by cgScirocco_

From what I hear...the proposal on the Maine ballot (just like Cali) is "set up" in a counter-intuitive way.

If you're FOR gays getting equal rights, you have to vote NO.

Marriage isn't a right, CG.
by LT-7

It is an institution that registers people to legitimize children they have in the future. It has no purpose for a homosexual couple.

The discrimination against all unmarrieds that IS wrong by companies and agencies should be stopped for ALL unmarrieds, not just homosexuals. Then you are talking about fairness toward citizens who are all equal, not trying to join the inequality.

Just curious...

did you ever post an opinion here on the Justice Dept's opposition to the ballot initiative in Kinston, NC that removed party affiliation from their ballots?
Gays already HAVE equal rights
by Chukar
if they marry spouses of the opposite gender, they have exactly the same rights as heterosexuals who marru spouses of the opposite gender. What you cockeyed leftists seek is SPECIAL rights for homosexuals. Not equal rights, but SPECIAL rights.

Of course marriage is a right granted by the state. It is discrimination to deny it for some people. Where did you get that definition that marriage "legitimizes children they have in the future?" That's utterly ridiculous. Many, many, many couples get married who cannot (because of age or other reason) or choose NOT to have children. Are you saying those marriages don't have to be "registered?" Ridiculous. You don't get to define marriage and neither do religious fanatics.

No. It is not a right. Rights are for everyone except those who have lost them by committing felonies or such. Free speech and voting are rights. Marriage is not. It is a way of registering couples who intend to have legitimate children, much like birth and death are recorded. It is record keeping for determination of legitimate heirs, not a right.

Marriage is not allowed for everyone. 8 yr. olds cannot marry, no matter how much they are in "puppy love". Minors aren't allowed to marry below a certain age even with permission of a guardian. Brothers and sisters and people married to someone else cannot marry. First cousins generally aren't allowed to marry.

Marriage has been misused to deny equal treatment to people, but that does not make it a right. It just means that it should be illegal for anyone to be treated differently due to marriage. Marrieds and unmarrieds who are couples should be treated equally regardless of sexual orientation.

Adults of sound mind and body, should be able to get married. Procreation is a "nut-wing argument", LT. I'm not surprised you're adopting it.

If there's such "sanctity" attached to marriage, then divorce should be outlawed.

"For the children", of course.

Gawd.

Yes, it is a right

given to people by the state who make the rules about age, etc. There is NOTHING in the law that says it's about "legitimizing the children." That would be discrimination against older adults who marry who would not meet that criteria. Adults are given that right - and same-sex marriage of adults is a right that is withheld by the state - it is discrimination.

LT is so consumed with "trying to maintain her rep" as being a fair minded, "independent thinker", she just spouts untenable shit, and goes up against people like us, to make herself feel better smarter.
