Does Peggy look fat?
by Caprivi
I've noticed she looks like she's gained weight again. Last time that happened, well, we all know how that ended. Could she and icky Duck be expecting a little duckling?

I actually thought Peggy looked a little pudgey in the latest episode . . . but how long have her and Duck been shacking up? I think they got started around the time the new fall school year began. . even if she got knocked up during their first tryst, she would not really be showing by Thanksgiving time. . . maybe she's letting herself go cause she has landed a man?

Her clothes are not flattering, but she looks like a normal person.

When Duck tries to talk Peggy into meeting him at the hotel, he says, 'they make a monte christo sandwhich (whatever that is) and you know you like those'. One thing I've learned from watching MM is that details count. She does wear unflattering clothes that's true but I still think she's heavier than she was when the season started.

You eat enough monte christos and you'll get fat too. Basically, it's a ham sandwich dipped in batter and fried. Yowza!

You're all chauvinist pigs. She looks just fine. I'd kill to be her weight.

I am not a chauvinist pig . . . I love Peggy Olson. And I think she is gorgeous. But the simple fact is that Peggy has always worn highly tailored form-fitting clothing. In the first season, as she gained weight, she began to look sloppy . . . but in this season, her clothing is very fitted, very streamline and tailored. And the fact is that in this latest episode, there was a disshelved element to her appearance that was new, esp. around her waist.

I love Peggy's wardrobe, in a weird way. She wears lots of plaid, which I personally dislike so it, maybe this is weird, draws my attention. I have noticed, over and over, how Peggy wears plaid dresses that are tightly fitted at her waist. .

and then this week, she has things sloppily draped around her waist. .

I don't know what it means but everyone associated with the show is so carefully, we see the results of tons of professional work, such as in wardrobe. If Peggy's wardrobe is different, it was very likely done on purpose and with some reason. .

it is not chauvinism to notice it. and with Peggy's history it is only natural for folks to recall her unconscious pregnancy when she got fat.

I agree that Duck's comment on the Monte Cristo was the show communicating to the viewers that Peggy is comfortable with Duck, and therefore, has stopped somewhat watching her weight. It is something most of us in any relationship have either observed in our spouse or witness in ourselves, and it is exactly the kind of detail that I love about this show (ignoring the unintentional weight gain from Leah Remini gained on King of Queens).

My two favorite characters are Peggy and Pete, and I think it is because their lives seem to me to be the most realistic (or at least the most akin to the average mid-level professional). They work hard, struggle with the curve-balls thrown to them, and just want to succeed, yet for whatever reason, their hard work alone is not enough.

So I do not want to hear that I am some sort of pig for agreeing that Peggy gained weight. And if you wish you were down to her chubby weight, maybe you should watch less MadMen and work out more.

Well the actress recently got married...I don't know if Pete's shotgun put in an appearance at the ceremony...

Peggy looks great. What a catty thing to say about this perfectly normal looking professional woman. When are we going to stop forcing unrealistic body image expectations upon the women of America.

People like Tizzie are deconstructing the feminst movement, one catty comment at a time.

Elizabeth Moss should be commended for not caving to Hollywood pressure to become anorexic thin. Curvy is sexy.

You're missing the point. I'm saying she might be pregnant and that it's part of the story. Nothing at all to do with being catty, or having unrealistic body images, or making attempts to deconstruct the feminist movement. Wow! I thought we were talking about MM which last time I checked is all make-believe stories about make-believe people. So my observation was meant to be taken in the context of this make-believe world. Elizabeth Moss's character looks like they gave her extra padding so we, the viewers might notice and wonder, gee, could she be pregnant, again. That's all I meant by my question.

I haven't noticed it, and I don't think Matt's going to get Pegs knocked up every other season.

I've definitely noticed that Peggy looks heavier as we've moved into this season and wondered whether it's partly the result of wardrobe choice. While other women on the show wear a more monochromatic look characteristic of the 60's, Peggy wears a lot of blouse/skirt combinations or patterns which cut her at a high point on her waist. I wondered whether it was meant to convey that she models her mother and sister in their more matronly/working class fashion sense and hasn't yet transitioned to a more chic Manhattan look.

Or maybe we're meant to be reminded of Peggy's earlier pregancy. We're way overdue for due for that storyline to rear its head.

Finally, the last time I found myself taking note of wardrobe was in Guy Walks Into An Advertising Agency. In that one, there were several shots in which my eye was drawn to the character's feet... specifically Sal's light brown shoes in the scene where everyone gathers round the office, another in which Lane holds his shoes waist high as he stands in Bert Cooper's office, and most noticeably, Guy's slight highwater pants as he confidently strolls through the office. I didn't realize how subtlely I'd been delivered visual cues until *after* the pivotal scene.

Weiner et al set us up with just as many visual as auditory breadcrumbs. They're brilliant in this regard,
