Roger calling Joan
by tizzie.lish

I loved it that Roger called Joan. He trudged through his daughter's wedding, made the best of an awful situation. He must have reflected, throughout that dreary wedding, on the contrast between Mona and Jane.

One thing I liked about Roger was his seeming equanimity in the face of Jane's petulance and drunkenness. He hauled her into the horse, shucked her ff his shoulder into their marital bed like a sack of potatoes .. . he didn't seem angry, more like resigned.

And then, when the unavoidable nightmare of his daughter's traumatized wedding and Jane passing out drunk, he gave himself a little comfort. He called Joan.

I am glad he did that. Even cads like Roger deserve to feel loved and cared about. He put himself in his awful position, married to a joke of a mate. How can men be so daffy when they make such choices? Do that many men really think that looks matter over who a woman is?

How about making that call while sitting on the bed with his drunk wife. That is bold. Roger just does not give a damn.

In this episode, Mona was looking hot.

It was bold . . . sort of . . Jane was passed out.

I think the fact that he made the call with Jane passed out beside him showed that he was very, very eager to have contact with someone he cared about and who cared about him. He needed to talk to someone who loved him, to express his reaction to the assasination. First, he stoically got through the wedding because he loves his daughter and he sucked it up . but with Mona gone, he had no one supporting him. The wedding was the first major life event since the divorce and remarriage. Roger has taken women's support for granted. He was a child reaching out, and in that childlike frame of mind, he behaved childishly. . . calling next to Jane. He was a little boy looking for love.

I like Roger. I don't like his allycatting but I would love to see him happy, see him treating a woman well. I think he would like to do well with Jane but he has realized, too late, that he chose very unwisely. I am sure he has thought, a million times, that he could have had Joan instead.

I never saw anything about Mona that would explain his rejection of her. I don't think he's happy, I think he's foolish!
