can the government really control our weight?
by baltimore aureole

many electrons have died in slate recently on the topic of potential government policies/taxes to make fat people lose weight

reality check - aren't alcohol and tobacco BIGGER health threats than big macs and fries?

if we're not contemplating solutions to THOSE, then how can anyone take the fat arguments seriously?

and while we're at it - why is the obama administration ADDING to the public health misery by quasi-legalizing pot - in certain states all you need is a forged (or internet) prescription to get stoned now.

BA, if I'm not mistaken, alcohol and tobacco are already taxed. Higher insurance premiums for the obese would effectively be a fat tax, some one argue (but not me).

And while I've never smoke pot, I'm glad the government is finally beginning to stop wasting money on that war. It is as winnable as the war on alcohol was, and the net result is a larger prison population while really not reducing use among those who really want to use it.
