CHILL: Stevens' Poignant Allegory Is Welcomed
by Usama3

Folks should calm down about Stevens' review- I think its rather thoughtful and poignant.

It wouldnt be the first time that a fanciful story about dreams and special 'friends' and scary enemies was really a biting commentary on the economics and politics of the day. The Wizard of Oz, beloved by kids for generations, has widely been considered an allegory about late 19th century economic affairs and the dire state of politics in America.

Its also noteworthy that Micah and Katie have no religious beliefs to rely on or to cope with their circumstances- another observation by Stevens. Katie is seen holding a cross in her bloody hand as she slumps dazed on the first floor near the end of the movie. But there is no mention of even seeking refuge in a church, synagogue, temple, or mosque.

For the record, 'demons' are a Christian or Western belief. It seems logical that they would have attempted to contact a priest or church, rather than a scientist. So one could assume there was an intentional commentary on the absence of spirituality in the two.

I shared Stevens' suspicion regarding their ownership of the house too. Its assumed it was in California and thus in a higher housing market than say, Oklahoma. That property was perhaps $1 million in value. She was right to question whether their personal finances and the state of the American consumer's debt given the script never discusses how Micah could afford such a property. As well, there are investors and observers who have casted a great deal of scorn on day trading as an unethical form of 'gambling' which has diminished the standards and intent of the investment industry. I believe Warren Buffet is one of those throwing scorn. So the questionable ethical standards of day trading could be included in the allegory.

I would add that the fact that the demonologist was first away, then unreachable and therefore too late and the paranormal 'ghost expert' was helpless seems to speak of the failure of science to actually 'solve the problem'.

This too could have allegorical meanings. We all know how economists saved America from the recession and have guided her to a stable economy for so long.
