Just an all around bad article Saletan
by Eigenvector

The notional concept presented is actually not a terrible one. The idea that driving should be an automatically controlled even that doesn't actually require driver input. It would certainly cut back on accidents and realistically driving a car is a one-dimensional activity. Drivers go from point A to point B and follow a pre-determined path in doing so - a perfect arrangement for computer controls.

But your article itself was terrible. Your example was this Lexus car that helps the driver by adding torque and whatnot in dangerous situations. BFD! There are plenty of project cars out there that pilot themselves through exceptionally hazardous and imperfect conditions - and the example you give is a car with assisted steering??? The other problem with your article is the notion that it would be better to alter the car rather than encourage people to, you know, actually pay attention at the wheel. Accidents occur for many reasons, some of which are totally out of our control, however the huge bulk of them are driver inattentiveness or excessive speed. In the first case making your car an autopilot robot would certainly reduce the accident rate - so would, you know, paying attention. Oh well might as well replace human responsibility with a robot - it's so much easier than having to focus your abysmally short attention span.
