Maybe More Than Fluff

Admission: I harbor a deep, deep crush on Norah Jones - so I might be willing to forgive her more than most, musically. But I think Jonah has a point in this discussion, that there is something lurking beneath the surface of her sleepy twee-jazz innocuousness. Lyrically, she has always been sly and sexual - something her voice conveys perfectly - but musically, her choices retain a lazy FM Lite way of thinking. The songs always sound like brilliant ideas stunted in their growth - terrific snippets of melody and phrasing never driven to completion. "Chasing Pirates" proves that while she's changed the mechanisms slightly (I almost detect a hint of aggression!), the execution is still the same.
