Before the 1967 War, the left LOVED Israel, because it was the only socialist country that had ever worked and "Zionist" was an honored title. If the socialist Israelis had fought off the nomadic Arabs, it proved Marx was right all along. If you don't believe me, watch "Exodus" the next time it is on TV. It is wildly pro-Israeli and the script was written by a well-known leftist named Dalton Trumbo.

But then, alas! The Soviet Union decided that the Arabs were more useful allies and it turned against Israel on a dime. Naturally, the left had to follow suit. Now, they no longer seem to even realize that the Soviet Union no longer exists. It kind of makes me think that, despite its claims to being the heart of conscience and compassion, the left has neither one. But then, maybe we should have realized that from the Hitler-Stalin Pact.

That's OK, the same phenomenon gave us the Neocons, a bunch of whom were installed at Langley by Ford's Chief of Staff (remember who that was?), and they systematically exaggerated the Soviet threat for a decade or more. So it all evens out.

You've cleverly ascertained that those of us on the left base our foreign policy positions solely on what the Soviet Union does.

And then there are those, who in their hunger for power, know that the New Two State Solution won't solve anything except perhaps prolong the containment/appeasement of a region of the world that has a product they buy but will not longer accept gold, and now wants blood too. It seems the Left is willing to use Israel as a scapegoat as usual, since the chants of "Death to Israel" seems more comfortably farther away than the cry of "Death to Israel, Death to America", that rang loudly and distressingly close to their little kingdoms here.
